August 4, 2019 - Meyers Chuck AK

Steve and Kevin with Alex and Paulo had visited this small community on the way north and really wanted to stop here again on the southbound trip.  It did not disappoint.  We had gotten up early and made it there by noon, with a favorable 2 knot current most of the way.  Warm and sunny weather again.  Steve got us onto the dock quickly and smoothly and we relaxed for a bit and then decided on a big dinghy ride first, a hike, then kayaking in the afternoon when the tide is higher.

It is Sunday when we pulled up to this dock at the post office.  A woman yells out from her house window if she can help.  We just mentioned seeing the post office and although not open she offers to come down and open it, let us buy a couple postcards, write and send them.  We had a nice conversation with her.

Kevin was not sure if he should hide for a picture of the dock.

After some lunch where Kevin made us sandwiches, we went for a walk-hike on the island.

Cindy jumping back after the tide rose.  We estimated this day at 20 feet of tide change,
or about 1 foot every 20 minutes!

Late afternoon was some kayaking around the bay.  Swimming might have happened but there are some jellyfish in the water here.

We had a nice chat with several people on the dock.  One man who's family brought him here in 1945 after the war where his Dad told him he did not want to be shot at anymore.  Fishing was bad so they had moved across to Thorne Bay on Prince of Wales Island to work in logging.  He met his now wife there and they are two of the year round residents there of the maybe 7 that are there total year round.  We found out his wife is the post master we met and as well the woman who sells cinnamon rolls in the mornings to visitors on the dock.  We bought 6 of them and they were yummy!  One of the boats on the dock had two older gentleman from Haida Gwaii and they told us some stories as well.

We saw before leaving Petersburg that the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) could be out the next few nights.  We have been trying to get up around 1am most nightS looking to see if they were out.  Tonight they were there.  We got the kids up and spent more than an hour watching them.  They were stunning.
